Carcassonne would have to be one of the most well preserved medieval cities in France. It’s a great place to step back in time and get a feel what it would have been like to live in the Middle Ages.
The fortress was restored in the 19th century and has remained in almost perfect condition since then.
It’s now a UNESCO World Heritage listed site and one of the most popular tourist destinations in France.
Carcassonne is well known for its Gothic cathedral but aside from that it’s just a great place to wander and do a little window shopping.
The walled city is easily visited as a day trip from Toulouse or Perpignan or you could see most of the sights in an afternoon if just passing through.

Wow, had no idea Carcassonne was so beautiful! Will definitely have to check it out one day.
Best seen in the morning or evening after the coaches have gone. You can also see it in Robin Hood, Prince of Theives. They left some of the medieval alterations to make the castle look more authentic
Looks beautiful there. I love how French castles have the rounded towers. they look more fairytale-like than the British ones that more of a Lego look about them.

Carcassonne is a lovely place. You’ve caught the light well. Hope you weren’t too cold. We visited in February and there was a terrible wind whipping through.
This is my home town! Looking at the photos really makes me home sick. I have been living overseas for nearly 6 years. My sister has a hotel/restaurant (with home made food) and a bed & breakfast in Carcassonne btw, if anyone is interested.
Just one of the places in France that is on my list! You’re pictures are great and they have reinforced my desire to visit.
I’m not such the biggest France traveler, but Carcassonne is one place that I definitely want to get to. I knew it first from a board game of the same name. Even the picture on the box is cool. What is the closest airport?
It’s about half way between Toulouse and Perpignan so you could fly into either though Toulouse isn’t a particularly interesting city. You could even try Girona in Spain and then drive 2 hours to Carcassonne.
Carcassonne has been on my list for a long time. These photos really inspired me to just make the journey. Beautiful photos!
