Paris Day Trip: Marly-le-Roi

Marly-le-Roi is a 20 minute drive to the west of Paris, provided you don’t get lost like I did. Having a GPS which works usually helps. The very small old town has a few pretty cobblestone streets but on the Monday I visited everything was closed so there was little to do but head to the town’s main attraction; the Parc de Marly.

Parc de Marly

The park used to be home to the Chateau de Marly, used by Louis XIV when he wanted time away from formal life at the nearby Chateau de Versailles. The chateau was destroyed after the French Revolution and now only some of the foundations remain.

The water supply at Marly-le-Roi was used to provide water for the fountains at Versailles using a specially engineered machine known as the Machine de Marly. It pumped enough water each day to support the city of Paris but unfortunately it was pulled down too. The Parc de Marly still has plenty of water but it has no use except for joggers to run around.

Aside from jogging or having a picnic there isn’t much to do in the park although there are some quirky statues like this one of Daphne being chased by Apollo. Poor girl.

Original statues from the Chateau de Marly can now be found in the Louvre Museum in the Cours Marly including the famous Marly Horses.

While it is a pretty park, there are plenty of other day trips from Paris which I would recommend ahead of a visit to Marly-le-Roi.

Jardin du Pre Catelan

The Pré Catelan is a small botanical garden found within the Bois de Boulogne, the woodlands to the west of Paris. It’s one of my favourite places to sit and read on the rare occasions in Paris when the sun comes out. It’s so quiet that it’s hard to believe you are only minutes from the Boulevard Peripherique, the main boulevard circling Paris.

The garden is mostly wide open space but some areas have small winding paths which you can explore.  There is also the Jardin Shakespeare which has all the plants mentioned in Shakespeare’s works.

I’m not the only one who likes to sit and read in the park.

If you have kids, you can let them play on the grass (unlike in other Parisian parks), play on the swings, and/or take them to the Theatre de Verdure du Jardin Shakespeare to see one of the regular shows.

As for the garden itself, the flower displays obviously change with the seasons but in general, they aren’t anything special. You can see the tulips in spring but during the rest of the year the flower displays are quite subdued.

If you are feeling hungry and want a full on foodie experience, you can try the Le Pré Catelan Restaurant run by Frederic Anton. You can read a very detailed review of the restaurant at Food Snob. It’s not for the budget conscious and the review is mixed but it would be quite an experience.

Lastly there is this copper beech tree which has been labelled as a ‘remarkable tree’ for both its age and the circumference of its trunk. It is believed to be more than 200 years old and is 5.60 metres in circumference.

Parc des Buttes Chaumont

Yesterday was my first visit to the Parc des Buttes Chaumont in the 19th. I haven’t spent much time in the 19th so I was lucky to have Karin and Paul show me around and take me out for a drink at the Rosa Bonheur. It’s a man made park with a pretty lake and waterfall and from the temple at the top of the cliff you get great views of the Sacre Coeur and the 19th. This is a great picnic spot and hopefully I’ll make it back so I can get some better photos.

Parc de Bagatelle | More Irises

This is my second visit to the iris garden in the Parc de Bagatelle. Irises are so amazing! I think I love them more than any other flower. The colours and varieties are incredible. This is the best display of irises I have ever seen anywhere in the world. I will definitely be back next year for more.

Parc de Bagatelle in May

Yesterday I went to the Parc de Bagatelle with Leesa. The irises are still in flower but they probably only have a week or so to go before they are finished for another year. It’s also worth visiting for the peonies if you like them. It’ll still be a couple more weeks before all the roses are in flower so I’ll be heading back some time in June to check that out.

It’s only been a month since I first went to this park but it has already become one of my favourite parks in Paris. It’s quiet and beautiful and a nice alternative to the overcrowded parks you find in the centre of Paris.

I’ve never really noticed peonies before today. I never thought they were anything special so have never grown them or bought them. Today at the Parc de Bagatelle, I saw the fantastic peony display they have near the Chateau de Bagatelle. Really beautiful flowers in many colours.

It’s iris time at the Parc de Bagatelle. Many have started to flower but I’d say the majority will be in full bloom next week or the week after. Not to be missed if you ask me.

Jardin des Tuileries

Had a quick walk through the Jardin des Tuileries yesterday. There aren’t many flowers on show at the moment, seeing as the tulips have now finished, so it was quite boring. Took a few pics anyway.

Pré Catelan

The Pré Catelan (Catelan Meadow) is a small park right in the middle of Bois de Boulogne, not far from the Parc de Bagatelle. It’s a cute little park but can often be overrun by kiddies so if you want to visit in peace, be sure to get there early in the morning.

Jardin des Plantes

I used to love the Jardin des Plantes but when I was there yesterday it seemed like it has lost a lot of its beauty. Maybe it’s because tulip season is just about over and the iris have yet to come out in flower (for the most part) so there weren’t many flowers to see. I don’t know but I will go back in a couple of weeks to see the beautiful bearded iris which should be in flower.

Parc de Bagatelle

After a 45 minute walk through the Bois de Boulogne, I entered the Parc de Bagatelle, one of the most beautiful parks in Paris. The park is much larger and more informal than I expected and there is a lot to see, the small Chateau de Bagatelle, a little waterfall, a couple of bridges over the man-made lakes and lots birds; ducks, geese, swans, and peacocks.

The tulips are out at the moment but I’ll likely head back next month when the Dutch Iris will be on display. The real show is in June and July when most of the 8000 rose bushes will be in flower and another visit will be in order.

From ParisInfo:

Created in the 18th century at the heart of the Bois de Boulogne, the beautiful Parc de Bagatelle is laid out in the Anglo-Chinese style. The 24-hectare park is landscaped in a determinedly romantic fashion and features charmingly bucolic scenes with waterfalls, grottoes, little bridges and a Chinese pagoda.

The park, designed by the landscape architect Thomas Blaikie, includes a world-renowned magnificent rose garden of 8,000 rose plants representing 1,200 species, an orangery, the Trianon, small thematic gardens — the iris garden, the presentation garden, the perennial plant garden, etc. — that present plants by species.

Jardin des Serres d’Auteuil

Jardin des Serres d’Auteuil – pretty botanical garden near my house in the 16th.

The Jardin des Serres d’Auteuil is a botanical garden set within a major greenhouse complex located at the southern edge of the Bois de Boulogne in the 16th arrondissement, with entry at 1 avenue Gordon-Bennett, Paris, France.

The site first served as a botanical garden in 1761 under Louis XV. Today’s greenhouses were constructed 1895-1898 under the direction of Jean-Camille Formigé (1845-1926). In 1998 they became part of the Jardin Botanique de la Ville de Paris.

Today the greenhouses produce about 100,000 plants per year for the interior decoration of municipal buildings.

Parc de Boulogne Edmond de Rothschild

I used to visit Parc de Boulogne Edmond de Rothschild quite often when I lived in Boulogne. It’s a great place to have a picnic or just hang out admiring the Japanese style gardens. There are also a couple of horse stables and if you’re lucky you can watch a bit of horse jumping. You can also find the derelict Chateau de Rothschild there owned (or previously owned) by the well known Rothschild family who also owned the beautiful Chateau de la Muette in the 16th.
