Precious

While Precious is not based on a true story, it’s a composite made up of similar stories heard by a literacy teacher in Harlem during the 80s. Precious is 17, illiterate, and pregnant with her second child. Physically and sexually abused by both of her parents, her life is barely worth living. She finally gets a chance at a better life when she changes schools, learns to read and write, and gets the support and care she needs from her teacher.

This story is pretty fucked up, tbh. It’s crazy what she goes through and even crazier to think that this kind of thing actually happened.

Surprise appearances by Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz.

Precious is by far the best movie I’ve seen this year. Go see it!

Tete de Turc

I saw another good French movie on Friday, Tete de Turc. Set in one of the poorer suburbs of Paris, a teenage boy of Turkish decent gets involved in local riots and ends up throwing a Molotov cocktail. It lands under the car of a doctor there to help a resident. The boy panics but manages to pull the doctor from the burning car. The authorities don’t realise that he is the one who threw the bomb and is later declared a hero. The doctor’s brother is the policeman on the case to find who was responsible and even though no one is talking, he slowly figures out what happened.

I’m not a huge fan of police thrillers but this is worth seeing, at least to get an idea of what life is like in the banlieue.

8 Fois Debout

Finally a movie worth seeing. Julie Gayet plays a woman without a proper job (and little chance of getting a job) who is months behind on her rent and is about to be evicted from her apartment. She can’t afford to look after her son so only sees him every other weekend, if that. She struggles in job interviews and can’t even get a basic job at a supermarket. She befriends a guy in her building who is pretty much in the same situation.

What this movie really shows is how easy it is to end up alone and living on the street with nothing. If you live month to month with your paycheck, as so many people seem to do, it just takes a run of bad luck to end up with nothing.

I’m always surprised at how so many people don’t know how to manage their money and invest for the future. These people are just asking for trouble.

New York I Love You

I like movies where you have lots of little stories which eventually intersect each other. In New York, I Love You, you have lots of little stories but they don’t intersect in the end. It’s like snippets of New York life. I suppose that the point, life is full of lots of little moments which mean something, or nothing. I just don’t like that you can’t connect with any of the characters as you never get to know anything about them. By the same people who did Paris, je t’aime. Both are pretty forgettable.

Zuzana is a Porn Star | NSFW

In an interesting turn of events, it turns out that Zuzana from Bodyrock.tv is also a fairly well known softcore porn star known as Susana Spears. It’s funny because F said to me a while back that she might be into porn. I don’t know how he knew (hmm) but it turns out he was right! She’s also done Playboy and Penthouse in the past.

Here’s the proof – links are NSFW!!

Triple X Workout

The Triple X Workout looks much easier than it is. I haven’t done a workout for 2 weeks (bad!) and it’s amazing at how much fitness I have lost in such a short period of time. In fact, I couldn’t even complete this workout which is a first for me. :(

Part 1

Snowboarder – 10 reps
Backward lunge left leg – 10 reps
Backward lunge right leg – 10 reps

Complete 10 rounds of this sequence.

It was the snowboarder which killed me. I could only do 5 rounds of this sequence. Fail!

Ajami

Ajami is another movie which I thought could have been great but wasn’t. The movie tells a number of different, related stories in Ajami, in or near Tel Aviv. There is a lot of desperation, poverty, and violence in their everyday lives.

I don’t know if this movie was boring or if it’s just me who is bored with movies in general. It just wasn’t very engaging.

I’m yet to see a great movie this year. Hopefully something better will be coming out soon.

Movie #: 15

La Rafle

I’m way behind on my goal of seeing 100 movies in a year, mainly because I’ve been on holiday for the last 6 weeks. I’m going to have to start seeing 3 movies a week to catch up. Hmm, not sure I can find the time.

I saw La Rafle with Leesa at Bercy earlier this week. I don’t know why but I found this movie to be such a snore. The story behind the film is interesting enough, it tells the true story of 13,000 Jews in Paris in 1942 who were rounded up by the French police and deported to concentration camps and obviously to their deaths. It was interesting how the French collaborated and negotiated with the Germans to get rid of these people and how the French police went along with deporting their fellow citizens without question.

You would think an interesting story would make for a great movie but it didn’t. The acting seemed really poor and lacking in any emotion. Gad Elmaleh should stick to playing in comedies, I don’t know why he thinks he can be a real actor. Plus his character was really weak and pathetic. Jean Reno wasn’t much better, playing the Jewish doctor who didn’t really connect with the other characters or provoke any emotion. It was like they were just reading their lines and not really feeling anything.

It wasn’t all bad though, Melanie Laurant was great in her role as the nurse. I’ve always quite liked her anyway.

Prescription Only

If you have been reading my blog for a while, you might be under the impression that I don’t like living in France. That’s actually not true at all and there are many things I love about living here. There is no way I would spend 4 or 5 years in one place if I didn’t like at least some things about it.

So what’s there to like about France? Pharmacies! As far as I can tell, France is a country of hypochondriacs. There is a pharmacy on just about every corner and there is always a line to buy stuff. Unlike in Australian chemists pharmacies, you can’t really browse around and see what they have available, you generally have to ask for what you are looking for but they’ll most likely have it and they are surprisingly cheap.

But the reason I really love pharmacies in France is because you can get prescription only medications without a prescription. I don’t have a GP here in France and I can’t be bothered to get one but occasionally I do need some medicine, usually something for my crappy skin. But how can you get prescription medicine without a prescription? Just ask! Here’s how the conversation usually goes:

Me: Hello, I would like this medicine.
Pharmacist: Do you have a prescription?
Me: No.
Pharmacist: You need a prescription or I can’t give it to you.
Me: I don’t have one.
Pharmacist: Have you used it before?
Me: Yes (lie!).
Pharmacist: I really shouldn’t.
Me: Please.
Pharmacist: Well, ok then.

I’ve done this loads of times and they don’t seem to have a problem with it. Yesterday it was even easier:

Me: Hello, I would like this medicine.
Pharmacist: Do you have a prescription?
Me: No.
Pharmacist: Ok.

Saint Malo

I visited Saint Malo in November 2008 on a day trip from Mont Saint Michel, where I was spending 2 nights.

Saint Malo is a really sweet little town with beautiful stone houses and great little cafes where you can enjoy delicious cakes with best cream France has to offer. You can’t beat dairy products from Brittany and Normandy :)

A couple of hours visiting the town was only enough to pique my interest. This is one place I’d like to return to and spend a few days exploring the little streets and shops.

Mont Saint Michel

Mont Saint Michel is one of the most unusual places I’ve visited in France. The small island looks as though it has remained unchanged for centuries with tiny cobblestone streets, pretty original houses, and the great Abbey which dominates the island and which can be seen from miles away.

The two most fascinating aspects of Mont Saint Michel for me are the tides and the pre-salted lamb. The 14 metre tides move incredibly fast and it’s amazing to see water around the island one minute and then before you know it, the water is gone and there is just mud.

The marshes around the island are very salty and thus the sheep grazing there have a very salty diet. The meat is therefore ‘pre-salted’ and has quite a distinct taste to it. I always thought this was a hilarious way to describe meat but I’m sure it gets the tourists in.

Speaking of tourists, the island is full of them. In fact, it’s one of the most touristy places I’ve ever visited which is a big negative but it’s still worth visiting at least once in your life.

Before I went I was told I must have one of the famous omelet’s at La Mere Poulard as they make the best omelet in the world. Well these overpriced omelets are far from being the best and I’d probably rank as one of the worst omelets I’ve ever eaten. They are definitely relying too much on their reputation and take advantage of hapless tourists. To be avoided at all costs if you ask me!

I’d like to go back to Mont Saint Michel one day as it’s a great place for taking pictures and I’ll have to go back to the restaurant at the Mercure (yes the Mercure Hotel had the best food and service) for some more of that yummy pre-salted lamb.

Monet’s Garden

The first time I ever saw a painting by Claude Monet was at the Art Institute of Chicago. I loved Monet’s works as well as that of many of the artists of the Impressionism movement. Since then I’ve seen his paintings at many museums around the world but in particular at the Musee d’Orsay and the Musee Marmotton. So naturally I’ve always wanted to go to Monet’s Garden in Giverny to see where the artist lived and worked.

Monet’s Garden is open from 1st April to 1st November. I went on the 2nd April and have to say this isn’t the best time to visit. It was very cold and pouring with rain that day and almost none of the trees and other plants were in bloom. There were lots of daffodils in flower and a few tulips but that was it as far as flowers go. I would have loved to have seen it when more tulips were out and when all the trellises were covered in roses and wisteria, that would have been beautiful.

Even though it was amazing to see the garden and pond Monet had painted so many times, I don’t recommend visiting at this time of the year. The only good thing about visiting in April is that there weren’t that many other tourists visiting. I can imagine it would be packed in summer. I will definitely be going back when the gardens are at their best.

Chateau de Chantilly

Chantilly is a small town less than an hours drive to the north of Paris. I’ve always wanted to visit as it sounded like a cute little town to visit and it is.

The Chateau de Chantilly is stunning, as are the gardens which include both formal French gardens and the ‘wild’ English garden. April is obviously not the best time to visit as few of the trees and flowers were in bloom so it would be better to visit in May or later in the year.

I love French chateaux and definitely recommend visiting Chantilly if you are looking to do a day trip from Paris.

Chateau de Fontainebleau

I first visited the Chateau de Fontainebleau 10 years ago as a friend of mine was living and studying in the town. It’s a perfect day trip from Paris and seeing as my parents and Ferbent had never been before I figured it was worth a second visit.

As with most chateaux in France, the Chateau de Fontainebleau is spectacular and the gardens are beautiful. I think the gardens are usually free to visit and you can go inside the chateau for a small fee. However, on the first Sunday of the month, entry is free (as with most museums in France), making it the perfect time to visit.

Cupcakes with Dark Chocolate Ganache and Chantilly

These will probably be my last cupcakes for a while because even though I love to cook and cupcakes are a lot of fun to make, I don’t really like them that much.

For these cupcakes, I used the Woman’s Weekly vanilla buttercake recipe. Once cooled, I cut them in half and added a squirt of home made Chantilly cream and then poured chocolate ganache on top.

Spanakopita

There are lots of different recipes around for spanakopita but I like to keep it simple and cheesy. Here is my recipe:

  • 2 tubs of ricotta
  • 1 pack of feta
  • Couple of handfuls of grated parmesan
  • Large pack of baby spinach – cooked and chopped
  • 2 eggs
  • Pepper

Throw all the ingredients into a bowl and mix together. Simple.

For some reason, filo pastry is difficult to find in France. La Grande Epicerie has a couple of different brands but I couldn’t find any at Monop or Carrefour. Weird.

Take a sheet of filo pastry and fold it into a rectangle. Brush with melted butter. Place a small spoonful of the cheese and spinach mixture at one end of the rectangle and roll up in a triangle shape. Make a bunch of them until you’re done.

Place the triangles on a baking tray and brush the tops with melted butter. Cook in a moderate oven (180 degrees or 140 if your oven is weird like mine) for 15 to 20 minutes or until brown.

Eat them while they’re hot and freeze whatever is left over to be reheated another day when you can’t be bothered to cook.
